MakeSpace: iOS App

MakeSpace is an innovative storage startup that gives users the ability to store physical objects and keep track of them virtually. By using MakeSpace’s new iOS app, users can easily view and track their stuff, organize it, add descriptions, and order it back with a tap of a button.

Background & Context

When I joined the team at MakeSpace, there were many missing foundational pieces within their product ecosystem. I helped shape those initial experiences from scratch and paved the way for the future of the overall product. Much of our focus was centered around optimizing user flows and allowing new users to easily convert to long-term MakeSpace users.

We approached problems in order of priority, starting with the iOS app, which needed the most work. The initial app had been outsourced by a third-party and wasn’t serving the business’s evolving needs.

Sign up & Onboarding

For a first-time experience, users would see a short series of onboarding screens to help educate the user on how MakeSpace works. Then, they would proceed to the login screen where they could create an account or sign in (if they were already registered with Makespace)

Setting up storage for the first time

We made the process of creating appointments more easy and manageable. By breaking the flow up into small steps, I was able to make the experience more focused and direct.

Home Screen Experience

I designed the landing screen to be a hub for your online closet. Our aim was to give users clear communication and visibility at all stages of the process.

As bins travel from the warehouse to users’ homes, the status indicator reflects its location, ensuring users know where their things are at all times. If a user wants to have items in storage sent back to them, they can easily tap the cloud button to add items to a delivery appointment. Our aim was to have everything centralized in one place, making it an easy to understand and interact with.

On Demand Appointments

To better leverage the product platform, we worked with operations to bring On Demand appointments to life. This meant that users could create new drop-off bookings and have them completed within the hour. We detect if the user is within the On Demand area and notify them of this premium service option.

Your Closet in the Cloud

By using the MakeSpace iOS app, users can stay organized by adding photos and writing detailed descriptions of what they’ve put into storage.

Within the item detail view, we give users easy customization tools so they can have full visibility on their stuff when it’s no longer with them.

The Big Picture

Thinking through the overall user flow, I made the overall map more linear and streamlined. At a high level, you can see how the address screen acts as a branch that determines what type of flow to serve to the user. I customized each flow by removing unnecessary information or creating new screens where applicable.
